PNG sprinter wins double in Australian championship

Toea Wisil takes out 100 and 200 meter gold Papua New Guinea’s sprint Queen Toea Wisil has won the double sprint at the Australian Athletics Championship in Sydney at the weekend. She clocked in 11.42 seconds to win the 100 meters and 23.76 to take the 200 meters. Wisil etched out Australia’s Melissa Breen by 0.22 of a second at the 100m sprint to claim gold. However, her win has caused some upset at the meet. According to The Canberra Times, Breen’s coach Matt Beckenham has questioned the rules of the championship after Breen’s claim to silver despite being technically the fastest Australian in the race. Beckenham aired his displeasure on Twitter saying that while Wisil was a “deserving winner”, “the rules defy common sense.” This ...

XV Pacific Games Tickets to Go On Sale Tomorrow

Tickets to the largest sporting event in the South Pacific, the Pacific Games, will go on sale tomorrow (Friday, March 26, 2015) according to Ticketing Manager, Tasman Samuel. In an email to the Games Organizing Committee (GOC), Mr Samuel said tickets would go on sale at Bank South Pacific (BSP) select outlets in Port Moresby and around the country. Port Moresby BSP outlets are BSP Town, Harbour City, Waterfront Kiosk, Boroko, BSP Waigani Drive, BSP Waigani Banking Centre and Vision City Kiosk. Meanwhile, not all country branches will be selling tickets. Games tickets can be purchased from these BSP outlets BSP Lae Top Town and Market, Mt. Hagen, Goroka, Wewak, Madang, Alotau, Buka, Kokopo and Kimbe. There are 3 types of packages ranging from K20 to K5,000, and single tickets between K10 and K20 depending on the sporting code and venue. Karate Names 42 Athletes as Target Team

The PNG Karate-Do Federation (PNGKF) has selected forty two (42) athletes as the Target Team for the Port Moresby Pacific Games in July 2015. The Target Team was selected after the Training Camp on 12th – 27th January 2015 and the Selection Trial held on 24th January 2015 in Port Moresby. Amongst the athletes selected were three finds from the 2014 PNG Games in Lae; Beverly Wasawa, Phyllis Bibuai and Donald Samuel. Also included in the team is Braden McMahon of Sydney, Australia. Braden has is a formidable competitor and has been considered for a kumite division. PNG athletes get golden incentive

Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko Papua New Guinean athletes have been given 20,000 reasons to win a gold at the XV Pacific Games in July, Post Courier reports. Individual athletes who win gold will receive K20, 000 while those in teams will receive the same amount each. Sports and Pacific Games Minister, Justin Tkatchenko, made the announcement that the government has allocated K5.7 million for gold winning performances as incentive for Team PNG. Tkatchenko said the incentive was a sign that the government was revolutionizing sports in the country and that individuals who received their prize money should invest it in developing their skills and talents.

2014: A Good Year for Karate

The PNG Karate-Do Federation (PNGKF) summed up what appeared to be a good year by partnering with PNG Sports Foundation and PNG Games Council in delivering a successful Karate Competition in the 6th PNG Games in November 2014 followed up with a Training Camp in Port Moresby in December 2014. During 2014 PNGKF hosted its 7th PNG Open Karate Titles and 25th National Karate Championships, and three Training Camps in Port Moresby. Six of Karate’s elite athletes participated in a four-day Karate Training Seminar with the Ishinryu Karate Dojo in Wollongong, NSW, Australia in early March and whilst another eight attended a four day Kata and Kumite Training with head and Mentor Coach Sensei Trevor Roberts at the Shotokan Karate Budokai Honbu at Camira, Queensland, Australia at the end of March 2014. PNG Karate grabs 2 silver and 14 bronze

The team waiting for the luggage at Nadi, Fiji. The PNG Karate Team returned from Suva, Fiji today after participating in the 16th Oceania Karate Championships on the 11th – 13th September 2014. The team of thirty one athletes won two silver and fourteen bronze medals. The silver medals came through the Men’s Team Kata (Leonard Gariadi, Cosmas Saliawali & Nigel Bana) and Jacklyn Barney (Women 50kg Kumite). PNG Karate team taking part in Oceania Karate Championship

PNG Karate-do Federation (PNGKF) Mentor/Coach, Sensei Trevor Roberts, said all the formalities including registration and weigh-in have been completed, and the athletes are now waiting for the competition which will take place on Friday and Saturday (11 – 12 September). The team is made up of a total of 31 athletes, 11 females and 20 males, a team manager and manageress and two coaches. Also traveling with the team are 2015 Pacific Games Karate officials, Miss Llane Munau, Mr Bernard Sinai, Sensei Mark Vele, Sensei Roy Stanley and PNGKF President Sensei Carl Mari. The PNG Karate-Do Federation (PNGKF) is preparing its team to attend the 16th Oceania Karate Championships in Suva, Fiji on the 11th – 13th September 2014.
