Sir Mekere to contest 2017 election

Former Prime Minister Sir Mekere Morauta has announced his intentions to contest the 2017 elections, according to blogger Martyn Namarong.

Namarong published a press release on February 14 stating that the former PM was urged by people concerned with the country’s state of affairs for him to return.

Sir Mekere said he had retired from politics five years ago and was enjoying life but felt the concerns of the people.

I hear what they are saying. I share their fears.

Mekere said people were worried about the future of the country. He said corruption was at scale never seen before, and pointed to problematic system and style of government.

Although having publically aired his intent to contest the elections in the National Capital District (NCD), Sir Mekere has yet to state which seat he would be contesting.

So, I have decided that I am prepared to contest one of the NCD seats provided that by the time for nomination I believe there is sufficient support from all quarters, especially current MPs and intending candidates, for a new Government.
